News from the world of Designing with Succulents

Succulent Container Gardens (now in its second printing) and Designing with Succulents (now in its fourth printing) both are bestsellers! The topic has never been hotter, and I'm currently at work on a third book as well as a DVD on Expertly Staged Succulents: How the Pros Create Award-Winning Compositions. The photo above is an example. There are more in my photo essay that celebrates the annual Cactus & Succulent Society show at the Los Angeles Arboretum.

Another popular photo essay (and one of my favorites, though not about succulents) is Faerie Tales, which tells how to find and photograph fairies in your garden. It's a fun read that will give you ideas on how to interest a child or grandchild in gardening.

Succulent Field Trip: Oasis Water Efficient Gardens, a new nursery in Escondido, CA, is the retail outlet for Altman Plants, the largest wholesale grower of cacti and succulents in the US. The plant material is gorgeous, and you'll see succulents you've never seen before. Nursery manager Carmen Contreras is an energetic gem. Contact me to schedule a field trip to Oasis for your group. It includes a complimentary tour of the nursery's waterwise gardens by Carmen, plus a succulent potting demo by me followed by a book signing. Bottled water is provided and picnic facilities are nearby.

A recent San Diego Union-Tribune article features my garden. It includes my tips for growing succulents in less than ideal conditions (my garden gets frost every winter plus summer temps in excess of 100 degrees, and the soil is nutrient-poor decomposed granite). Additional photos of my garden are on my website.

Succulent Container Gardens now has its own Facebook page with lots of news and information. Do "friend" me and "like" the book.

I look forward to your emails and comments, and updates on your own garden! --- Debra Lee Baldwin
