Garden photojournalist, artist and author Debra Lee
Baldwin shows how to use sculptural succulents to add beauty,
sophistication and whimsy to gardens and outdoor living spaces.
Unless otherwise noted, presentations are one hour (50 minutes plus Q&A).
Before and after, Debra will sign Designing with Succulents and
Succulent Container Gardens.
Venue requirements
A
slide show requires a digital projector, screen, microphone and darkened room. A
plant show-and-tell
or potting demo can be done outdoors, and requires a work table,
a
clip-on microphone, a separate table for the book signing, and
supplies (nursery plants, pots, soil, water, etc.).
Topics
Designing
with Succulents. Slide presentation. As Debra explains how to
cultivate succulents ranging from ground covers to tall trees,
you'll discover how these waterwise plants offer colors, textures
and forms certain to inspire your creativity. Included are low-maintenance, easy-care
container arrangements perfect for patios, entryways and decks.
Fresh Ideas with
Succulents. Slide presentation. Debra shows what's new and
exciting with these architectural, geometric and stylish "plants
that drink responsibly." You'll view gorgeous new cultivars and
learn how garden and floral designers are using succulents in
bouquets, bonsais, topiaries, terrariums---even wearable art!
Beautiful Succulents for Your Garden. Plant show-and-tell. Audience interaction is welcome during this informal presentation. Debra introduces various types of succulents,
discusses their care, describes what makes each interesting and unique,
and explains how to use them to create lovely, low-water gardens and
containers. Optional: The presentation is followed by a drawing
(members of the audience will take home plants). Ideal for small groups
(50 or fewer).
Succulent Container
Gardens Class (hand's-on). Using plants, pots, soil and other
materials provided by the venue, Debra demonstrates how to design and
plant a creative succulent container garden. She then helps attendees
select plants and compose their own arrangements. Participants may bring
containers or purchase them from the venue.
Ideal for nurseries and garden centers.

Debra is a wonderful speaker! Very knowledgeable, and engaging, with a
great sense of humor. She had a beautiful slideshow of photographs to
accompany her presentation that she effectively used to illustrate what

For event publicists ~ 25 ways to ensure good
attendance
~Announce the event in three
issues of your organization's newsletter.
~Promote the event on your organization's website, ideally at the top of
the homepage.
~Verbally announce the event at several meetings beforehand.
~Include five essentials of journalism in all promotional materials:
who, what, when, why, where.
~At a loss what else to say? Ask yourself what would motivate YOU to
come, and what you'd need to know in order to do so.
~Use bullet points and/or break up paragraphs longer than three lines.
~Include an eye-catching photo.
~Go with color if you can.
~Double- and triple-check the time, date and location...and the
speaker's name and claim to fame.
~Include the exact street address for those unfamiliar with the venue
(including the speaker!), so they can type it into a GPS navigation
system.
~Avail yourself of the speaker's bio, photos and other promotional
materials.
~At the end of the announcement, add "More info:" with a link to the
speaker's website.
~As soon as it's finalized, email the info to your membership, asking
them to "Save the Date."
~At one or more meetings prior to the event, distribute fliers.
~If you are a retailer, position a poster where customers are sure to
see it (i.e., near the register).
~To easily create a flier or poster, ask the speaker for one from a
similar event. Borrow the design.
~Brainstorm with the speaker about news hooks (article ideas, discussion
topics) likely to interest attendees as well as the local garden media.
~No need to do a formal press release, but do email members of the local
garden media six weeks prior to the event.
~Be confident. Radio show hosts, editors, columnists, garden writers and
bloggers are always looking for good content---providing they receive it
well in advance of the event.
~If no response, wait two weeks, then send a follow-up email. Don't
phone.
~One month prior, email local newspapers the basic info they need for
event listings.
~Notify other organizations whose members might be interested (for
example, the local Cactus & Succulent Society). Ask them to forward your
announcement to their members.
~Ask the speaker to help get the word
out by contacting professional acquaintances in your area, promoting it
on his or her website, and mentioning it in a blog post, eblast or
newsletter.
~Write up a brief Q&A with the speaker. Ask three or four questions via
email, then cut-and-paste the answers into your newsletter.
~One week prior, ask members who are into social media to announce the
event on Facebook, etc., with a link to your organization's website or
to the speaker's.
~Email a reminder of the meeting to your members. Encourage them to
bring a guest.
